THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT KADSURA - OUR FAVORITE PLANT

The growth of Kadsura and their care are reminiscent of grapevines. However, they are more resistant than most grape varieties.

Kadsura are highly adaptable to both soil and temperature. We only offer the most resistant and best available varieties.

Our Kadsura have survived temperatures of -15 and +40 degrees Celsius (5-104 °F)."Shanmai" is said to tolerate even higher temperature fluctuations of up to -30 and over +50 degrees Celsius (-22-122 °F). Our varieties originally come from the highest growing areas with regular frosts and hot summers. So they are not like the standard red or subtropical strains that are very delicate.

For the best growth, the flowers should be removed in the first few years so that the plant can grow bigger and stronger. Later, there are often very lush flowers, so it makes sense to thin out the flowers, similar to apples, in order to obtain a higher fruit quality.

Flowering occurs from April to May.

Kadsuras have fibrous shallow roots and prefer slightly acidic, airy soil. The soil should be kept as moist as possible. Slightly acidic sandy loam soils are optimal.

Like grapes, Kadsura can be grown well on a trellis or trellis, the planting distances are approx. 1.5 x 2 meters.

Our varieties are varietal and have a high purity in the seedlings.

As a rule, Kadsuras are monoecious (over 90%) or monoecious. Therefore, they have a very good self-pollination rate. A group planting of 2 to 3 plants also increases the yield. With good care and location, there are many fruit sets. Thinning out and focusing on the strongest fruit branches and fruit significantly improves fruit quality. In addition, to increase the quality, pollination can be carried out by hand. But that is not absolutely necessary.

Location:Plants will thank you if you amend the soil with organic matter before planting. The seedlings can remain in the pot for the first year. They prefer a constantly moist soil with a good water supply. In summer, the high temperature is less of a problem than the high radiation. A semi-shady location or a shading net is therefore irreplaceable and absolutely necessary in full sun, especially for seedlings and young plants.

Fruit:Depending on the variety and location, the fruits ripen from October to November. Maturity comes gradually. Only the Kadsuras that are fully ripe on the vine achieve their full flavor and are sweet and very tasty. Fruits harvested too early will not ripen!
The fruits have a limited storage time. They must not be stored too dry and should be stored in cling bags or closed glass bowls, for example, so that they remain fresh and juicy for as long as possible.

Cut:Kadsuras can be grown like vines. The most important thing is thinning out if the growth is too dense, to allow more air for fruit and flowers and to prevent diseases and improve fruit quality.
Pruning takes place as late as possible in winter, similar to prunus, plums, cherries, etc.

We offer you a hand-picked selection of the best varieties with a focus on winter hardiness, resistance and fruit quality. These are not to be compared with the regular red-fruited kadsura that can occasionally be found elsewhere in the trade.

  • Sowing is best done in the first half of the year.

    • The seeds are swollen in warm water for 24 hours.
    • Then they are wet with! not put wet sphagnum moss or sand or similar medium in a germination bag.
    • Germination takes place at around 24 degrees Celsius (75.2 °F) within several weeks to a maximum of 3 months. The germination rate for all our varieties is around 80 percent.
    • The pre-germinated seeds from the germination bags are then transplanted into slightly acidic, airy substrate. The survival rate of the seedlings in the first year is over 90 percent.

The germination is basically not particularly demanding. The biggest danger here is that the seeds get too wet and rot. This can easily be counteracted by the optimal choice of substrate.

The young plants must be protected from high levels of sunlight in the first summer.

The seedlings grow slowly at first and, depending on the variety, really get going after about 3 months. Large increases can be expected in the second year at the latest.

The germination rate, tested by us, is 80 percent. The seed is varietal and very fresh.
