THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT KADSURA - OUR FAVORITE PLANT

The growth of Kadsura and its care are reminiscent of vines. However, they are more resistant than most grape varieties.

Kadsura are very adaptable to both soil and temperatures. We only offer the most resistant and best varieties available.

Our Kadsura have already survived temperatures of -15 and +40 degrees Celsius (5-104 °F). “Shanmai” is said to be able to tolerate even higher temperature fluctuations down to -30 and over +50 degrees Celsius (-22-122 °F). Our varieties originally come from the highest growing regions with regular frosts and hot summers. So they cannot be compared to the standard red or subtropical varieties, which are very delicate.

For best growth, the flowers should be removed in the first few years so that the plant can grow larger and stronger. Later, very lush flowers often appear, so it makes sense to thin out the flowers in a similar way to apples in order to obtain higher fruit quality.

Flowering occurs from April to May.

Kadsuras have fibrous shallow roots and prefer slightly acidic, airy soils. The soil should be kept as moist as possible. Slightly acidic sandy loam soils are optimal.

Similar to grapes, Kadsura can be easily grown on a trellis or trellis; the planting distances are approx. 1.5 x 2 meters.

Our varieties are true to the variety and have a high level of purity in the seedlings.

As a rule, Kadsuras are monoecious (more than 90%) or monoecious. Therefore they have a very good self-pollination rate. Planting 2 to 3 plants in groups also increases the yield. With good care and location, there are a lot of fruit sets. Thinning out and focusing on the strongest fruit branches and fruits significantly promotes fruit quality. In addition, pollination can be carried out by hand to increase quality. But that is not absolutely necessary.

Location: The plants will thank you if you amend the soil with organic material before planting. The seedlings can remain in the pot for the first year. They prefer constantly moist soil with a good supply of water. In summer, the high temperature is less of a problem than the high radiation. A partially shaded location or a shading net is therefore irreplaceable and absolutely necessary in full sun locations, especially for seedlings and young plants.

Fruit: The fruits ripen from October to November, depending on the variety and location. Ripening occurs gradually. Only the Kadsuras that are fully ripe on the vine achieve their full flavor and are sweet and very tasty. Fruit that is harvested too early will not ripen!

The fruits have a limited storage time. They must not be stored too dry and should, for example, be stored in fresh bags or closed glass bowls so that they stay fresh and juicy for as long as possible.

Pruning: Kadsuras can be grown like vines. The most important thing is to thin out if the growth is too dense in order to allow more air for the fruits and flowers and to prevent diseases and improve the quality of the fruit.

Pruning is carried out as late as possible in winter, similar to Prunus, plums, cherries etc.

Here we offer you a hand-picked selection of the best varieties with a focus on winter hardiness, resistance and fruit quality. These cannot be compared with the regular red-fruited Kadsura that can occasionally be found in stores.

  • Sowing is best done in the first half of the year.

    • The seeds are swollen in warm water for 24 hours.
    • Then they are wet with! not put wet sphagnum moss or sand or similar medium in a germination bag.
    • Germination takes place at around 24 degrees Celsius (75.2 °F) within several weeks to a maximum of 3 months. The germination rate for all our varieties is around 80 percent.
    • The pre-germinated seeds from the germination bags are then transplanted into slightly acidic, airy substrate. The survival rate of the seedlings in the first year is over 90 percent.

The germination is basically not particularly demanding. The biggest danger here is that the seeds get too wet and rot. This can easily be counteracted by the optimal choice of substrate.    The young plants must be protected from high levels of sunlight in the first summer.   The seedlings grow slowly at first and, depending on the variety, really get going after about 3 months. Large increases can be expected in the second year at the latest.     The germination rate, tested by us, is 80 percent. The seed is varietal and very fresh.
