Magnolia officinalis – Chinese magnolia

Magnolia officinalis is a deciduous tree belonging to the Magnoliaceae family and is native to the mountain forests of central and southern China. It produces large, elliptical leaves and fragrant, cream-white flowers that are not susceptible to late frosts. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the dried bark (Magnoliae officinalis cortex) is used, traditionally to aid digestion and to relieve bloating and internal tension.

Germination type: Cold-germinating

Pre-treatment: Seed cleaning, followed by 2–3 months of cold stratification (moist, approx. 2–5 °C)

Sowing time: Autumn or early spring after a period of cold weather

Light conditions: Dark-germinating (cover seeds lightly)
Storage: If you do not want to or cannot sow your seeds straight away, there are a few things you need to bear in mind to ensure your seeds remain viable for a long time. You should store them in the best possible conditions. The seeds should be kept in a dry, airtight, dark container in a cool place with a stable temperature. You can, for example, store our seed packets in screw-top jars. For longer storage, you can add a small bag of silica gel, which absorbs moisture from the air. It is also important to check the seeds regularly.

As seeds are living organisms, they do not have an unlimited lifespan. However, we cannot give you a best-before date, as so many factors are crucial for seed germination. Optimal storage, however, ensures that you can enjoy your seeds for a long time – provided you haven’t sown them all at once ;)

Germination rates: In the product descriptions, you will find the germination rates, which represent an average between laboratory results and field germination. However, the stated germination rate does not guarantee the germination rate you will achieve at home, but merely serves as a guide to the desired emergence rate of the seeds.

Batch number: The batch number and filling date are printed on the seed packets; we are legally obliged to do so. If you have any questions about our seeds, please always quote the relevant batch number (e.g. 1_kc1_2023).
