Salvia miltiorrhiza - DANSHEN - Red Root Sage
An important plant in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).
As its name suggests, red root sage has thick red roots. It also enchants with its beautiful light purple lipped flowers, which attract bumblebees and the blue-black wood bee.
It is particularly valued for its positive effect on the cardiovascular system.
The dried roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza are used in various forms, e.g. powder, extracts and tinctures. These preparations are often used to treat cardiovascular diseases such as angina pectoris, high blood pressure and to improve blood circulation. Salvia miltiorrhiza is also used to relieve menstrual cramps and to support liver function.
The plant contains several bioactive compounds, including tanshinones and salvianolic acids, which have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and vasodilatory properties. These properties help to reduce blood clots and promote vascular health.
Sage is perennial and grows upright; in good soil, the shrub can become quite sprawling.
