Stauntonia conspicua, also known as "Melia" or "Japanese Stauntonia", is an attractive evergreen climbing plant with glossy, dark green leaves and fragrant, creamy white to pink flowers. Their fruits are oval and vary from light yellow to purple/black. These fruits are not only culinary appealing, but are also valued in traditional medicine, as are most other Stauntonians, particularly for their digestive properties.

 

The fruits are used in various recipes and can be enjoyed as a sweet and sour element. A popular recipe is aStauntonia compote, which is easy to prepare: simmer the fruit together with sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice and a little water until soft, then let it cool and serve chilled.

  • Germination:  Sowing is similar to Akebia, pre-treatment with GA3 or stratification helps. The germination tests were carried out with 0.5-1 g GA3 per liter.

    Not all species and varieties appear to require stratification. But this didn't have a negative impact either.

    Be sure to avoid waterlogging during rearing! 

    Germination temperature min. 15 to max. 24 degrees Celsius
