Chinese Vegetable Tree - Toona sinensis (seeds)

In China also knwon as sacred tree. It has beautiful, large, pinnate leaves, the new growth is often reddish and is very hardy. Once the plants are out of sapling, strong annual growth is possible.

 

Here they also grow excellently in loamy soil and have survived minus 25 degrees Celsius (-13 °F) with slight damage.

 

Very robust and low-maintenance.

 

Like the names "vegetable tree" and "Chop suey tree” one might assume, young shoots and leaves are used like vegetables. The green leaves are rich in vitamin A and contain a lot of protein. For example, they can be prepared like spinach and, depending on how they are prepared, taste similar to garlic or onions. They are also highly recommended as a soup vegetable. In China, almost the entire tree is used to prepare food.

 

The aromatic wood is said to have medicinal properties.

The fresh seeds come from the strongest and most fragrant trees with high resistance.

 

The germination rate, tested by us, is 85 percent.

  • The chop suey tree is relatively adaptable when it comes to pH. Ranges from 5.5 to 8 are tolerated. 

    We prefer slightly acidic, well-drained substrates as growing soil. 
     

    • To prepare for sowing, soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours, rinsing several times with lukewarm water.
    • Then cover the seeds only lightly with potting soil and press down a little.
    • Then set up the seed tray at about 20 degrees Celsius (68 °F). Germination occurs easily within a few weeks.
    • Sowing outdoors is possible from April when the soil has warmed up a bit.
