Dovyalis Prodigal – seedless "tropical aroicot" - parthenokarp
Dovyalis Prodigal is a modern, experimental cultivar. It is seedless - a characteristic that has hardly ever been realised in the stone fruit sector. Through targeted selection and possibly using somatic mutations or biotechnological methods, the variety is characterised by a completely seedless fruit. This not only makes it easier to eat, but also considerably expands the range of applications in the kitchen. Dovyalis Prodigal has a particularly intense flavour with slight hints of tropical fruits such as mango or passion fruit. These flavour components are the result of an altered ratio of sugar to acid content. The flesh is juicy, orange-coloured and fibre-free, covered in a velvety, edible skin. Like all dovyalis, this form also contains high levels of beta-carotene and vitamin C.
Growth habit: Dovyalis Prodigal is a small tree or shrub with medium vigour. Under ideal conditions, it grows to a height of between 2.5 and 3.5 metres, making it suitable for smaller gardens or protected cultivation in large containers. The growth is harmonious and bushy, with strong but easily mouldable shoots. It is very tolerant of pruning and flowers all year round.
Care: It grows in a drained substrate with a neutral pH value and a good supply of nutrients. No other special requirements. Generally undemanding and undemanding once established. It also tolerates dry periods. For many fruits, however, it is important to ensure a sufficient supply of water and nutrients. Fruiting is possible from the 2nd year if the location is good.
Special botanical and culinary characteristics:
- Parthenocarpic, 100% seedless fruit development
- Tropical-sweet flavour with a fine balance of acidity
- Rich in secondary plant substances and antioxidants
- Velvety-soft skin, edible and neutral in taste
- Versatile use: raw, dried, in pastries, as puree or jam
Botanical rarity with limited availability
Please note: Dovyalis only tolerates low temperatures around freezing point for a very short time. We keep them in large containers in a bright conservatory throughout the winter. However, overwintering is also possible in the living room in front of a bright window :) When frost is no longer forecast, the plants are moved to a sunny spot in the garden so that the sweetness of the fruit can develop optimally.
