Xanthoceras sorbifolium "Shaanxi" (seed)

Yellowhorn or Chinese Blossom Chestnut - another great Chinese plant!

Originally, these genetics were collected in the Shaanxi area of northern China, near the Mongolian border.

It is characterized by a special resilience and larger fruits and has very pretty, lush flowers. The nuts, with their macadamia-like aroma, are an excellent addition to everyones Food Forest or orchard.

The plants are self-fertile, but the yield should be increased by several plants.

The nuts are used in a similar way to hazelnuts, for example fresh, dried or roasted and ground.

You can also find literature that mentions the use of leaves and flowers.

In contrast to the hazelnut, Xanthoceras sorbifolium "Shaanxi" also bears fruit well on lean sites with low nutrient supply.

This is a type of fruit.

The germination rate, tested by us, is 85 percent.

    • Place the seeds in 45 degrees Celsius (113 °F) water, allow to cool to room temperature and soak for 3 days.
    • Then place the seeds in a germination bag with sand or sphagnum moss in a place that is around 20 to 25 degrees Celsius (68-77 °F).
    • Check the bag daily and don't keep it too wet.Traditionally in Asia, a basket with grass cuttings was used for pre-germination and the seeds were checked and turned daily until they cracked open.
    • As soon as the seeds crack open in the germination bag, they can be transplanted into their final germination container such as pots or trays with well-drained seed compost.

    • Sowing outdoors over the winter is also possible. Germination then takes place from April to May.

Be sure to protect against being eaten by mice etc.; otherwise the nuts will be gone very quickly!
